“Everybody needs a home”
A message from CEO Lesley Leece urging our community to take action this Homelessness Week.
The week of 1-8 August has been set aside to remember and act on the impact of homelessness in Australia. The theme this year has been nominated by Homelessness Australia as ‘Everybody needs a home’
For the 116,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in Australia this statement has particular significance. It should for the rest of the population as well because it is within our capacity as a nation to provide everyone with a home.
3rd Space is a drop-in centre that supports around 120 people every day of the week. These men, women and families are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless. Some may present with a range of complex needs including mental and physical health concerns, domestic and family violence, substance dependencies and trauma.
First Nations peoples are over-represented in the homeless numbers.
The vision of 3rd Space is to break the cycle of homelessness. To achieve this, it is internationally recognised that people need homes first and are supported in those homes so that other needs can be met and stability is reached.
The work of 3rd Space needs your support. There are many ways to support people facing homelessness, including
- Signing the petition being led by Everybody’s Home campaign
- Volunteering your time, skills or expertise
- Supporting 3rd Space on an ongoing basis
- Following and sharing our social media content
Thank you to everyone who has and continues to support vital work for our community’s vulnerable members.
