History

Supporting people experiencing homelessness since 1975

  • 1975 – The organization was established as 139 Club, a drop-in centre by community members, people experiencing homelessness and students
  • 1977 – The centre moved from 139 Charlotte Street to Spring Hill the auspice of QCOSS, the Queensland Council of Social Services and sector peak-body  
  • 1983 – The organisation became an independent organisation with government funding 
  • 1987 – In the International Year of Homelessness, the centre at 505 Brunswick Street was built
  • 2017 – The name was changed from 139 Club to 3rd Space in recognition of the significant contribution of a sense of community and belonging that the service brings
  • 2018 – 3rd Space café replaced the dining room. The refurbishment was made possible through a Dignity First Fund grant provided by the Queensland Government
  • 2019 – 3rd Space was able to provide services across 7 days per week, rather than Monday to Friday
  • Today – 3rd Space remains a significant provider of social support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness within the inner city and inner north Brisbane area.
